Hi everyone! My name is Kathy Higgins from My Boutique By The Beach!
I have been married to my wonderful husband, Don, for 26 years! I have 2 grown children from a previous marriage. Jason is 39 and Heather is 36. Heather is a single mom to my wonderful grandson Cameron, 11. He has been with me on several of my Facebook lives because he stays with us during his Christmas and Spring break. He also stays with us for 2-3 weeks during the summer! We love the time we get to spend with him!!
I was an Air Force brat until I was 10 when my dad retired. During that time I lived in Texas, Georgia, Washington, Spain then back to Washington where my dad retired.
I have been crafting since I was a teenager. I fell in love with sewing in Jr High School and made several of my own clothes, including my Senior Prom dress! I continued sewing when I had my children. I made my son's little corduroy overalls and my daughters cute little sun dresses. I also made flannel shirts. Then work and life got in the way and I stopped sewing for quite a few years. Then about 6 years ago I got the itch again and taught myself how to quilt by watching You Tube videos. I learned in October and decided I wanted to make quilts for my whole family for Christmas. That meant making 6 quilts in 2 months. Craziest goal I've ever made for myself but I managed to get it done!
I have wanted to open my own Etsy shop since I learned about Etsy but knew it was impossible while I was working as I had a job that required very long hours. When my husband was offered early retirement from his job we decided to buy a house at the beach. And 3 months later everything fell into place and we moved. I also decided to open my Etsy shop with the handbags I was sewing but that didn't work out too good. I started seeing wreaths in my Facebook news feed and started doing some research and watching You Tube videos and fell in love with the idea. The only draw back to living in our dream retirement spot is how far away it is to get wreath supplies. The closest Michael's, Hobby Lobby or JoAnn Fabrics is an hour and a half away so all my wreath supplies need to be ordered on line. But I have figured it all out and now my Etsy shop is full of wreaths instead of handbags!
A friend that I made through my business Facebook page asked me if I had seen the boards from Unique in the Creek. I hadn't so she gave me the link to the page and I watched one of Laurie and Dave's videos and knew I needed to try them. I ordered some flower boards and was hooked. I have since then ordered more flower boards, character boards and the Christmas tree boards. I have not tried the horse boards yet but will after the Christmas rush. Laurie is such a wonderful teacher and comes up with the most unique ideas! I have learned so much from watching her lives! And talk about funny.....oh my goodness I have the best time watching her and Dave. They crack me up!! I am so looking forward to the new recycled plastic boards. They might be available by the time this is posted.
So this is the short version of how I started my Etsy shop and how I started using the UITC wreath system. I do Facebook lives twice a week. You can find me at https://www.facebook.com/myboutiquebythebeach Also please check out my Etsy shop at www.myboutiquebythebeach.etsy.com I have 120 wreaths listed in my shop!
Laurie's comments: I have watched Kathy get better and better with every wreath she makes...she is VERY good at teaching and pretty laid back (I think that is the beach life she lives..wish we all could be that way). I love how Kathy tries new things and her color schemes are always so fun! She is fun to watch on her lives and always tries to answer everyones questions while doing the live...which is hard to do! thanks for being a UITC affiliate Kathy and keep up with the amazing things you are doing :)
