Types of Halloween Wreath & Thanksgiving Designs

Some of our favourite styles of wreaths for fall are the ones that incorporate a cute and seasonal face into the middle, like our signature Scarecrow Wreath.

Start Your Christmas Wreath with UITC™ Wreath Boards

Add “Character” To Your Christmas Wreath

Okay, let’s talk about adding a character centre to your Christmas wreath and Christmas crafting projects! One of our favourites is a wreath that doubles as a Christmas or holiday character, such as Santa Claus, a snowman, or Rudolph. These are some of our most popular Christmas wreath designs, and it’s not hard to see why… they are just so cute and cheerful!

To make a wreath like these, you’ll need the Character Wreath Board. This board is designed to have an image insert affixed to its centre, whether it be a picture of scenery, a greeting, or in this case, a character’s face!

At Unique in the Creek, we offer a wide selection of image inserts that you can affix to the centre of your Character Board. No matter what character or theme you choose for your Christmas wreath, we probably have an insert for it! Make a Christmas Tree or Angel Wreath

Not all Christmas wreaths have to be round! Our Christmas Tree and Angel Wreath designs both use our Triangle Board, and are definitely some of our most well-loved Christmas designs!

Making a Christmas Tree Wreath or Angel Wreath on the Triangle Board follows a similar process to making a wreath on any other of our boards – just pre-load the board with zip ties, and attach your chosen materials and accessories.

If you’re making a Christmas Tree wreath, you can “decorate” it as you would a normal Christmas tree, but on a smaller scale. Little ornaments from your local dollar store make a festive addition to this wreath design, as does ribbon. You could even attach a greeting via a wreath sign!

When it comes to making an angel wreath, don’t forget to add the head! Anything small and round could do for the head — e.g. styrafoam ball, ping pong ball, etc. — so long as you can dress it up!

About the Cross Wreath Board

The UITC™ Cross Wreath Board is one of our nine wreath boards that you can use as the base to create a stunning wreath, every time with just about any materials available! Seriously, DIY wreath making has never been this easy!

This board is 20″ x 13″ x 3/16″ and creates a finished wreath approximately 24″ x 16″. However, your finished creation can be much bigger depending on the materials you use.

Wreaths made on our Cross Board are perfect for outdoor use, such as displayed at a graveyards, memorial sites, or in a garden. Why? This board is made a little thicker than our other wreath boards, which adds extra weight and durability for outdoor display. The board itself is 100% weatherproof and can withstand all manner of conditions! Your wreath will be well-backed with this sturdy board!

The Cross Wreath Board is constructed entirely out of 100% recycled plastic. It’s even 100% recyclable but it should last forever as it is virtually indestructible.

How to Make a Wreath on the Cross Board

Once you’ve got your Cross Board ready to go, the next thing you’re going to need are zip ties, or cable ties. Displaying Your Cross Wreath Outdoors

Wreaths made on the Cross Board are ideal for displaying outside. This is due to the board’s durability and sturdiness, but also because the spiritual nature of the wreaths created on the board make them appropriate for use in outdoor religious ceremonies, graveyards, and memorial sites.

For instance, Janice Hilaski-Roberts created the wreath on the right with our Cross Board for a lovely tribute to a loved one displayed at a cemetery. What an absolutely beautiful tribute!

Let’s talk about our famous ombre flower wreath! When it comes to home decor, how do you transition out of summertime and into autumn? Some people prefer to swap out their summer decor for fall decor immediately on Labour Day weekend or the first official day of fall, but we have another idea:

How about some decor that’s specifically made to transition in between these two seasons?

We introduce to you: The Ombre Flower Wreath!

The DIY ombre wreath uses multiple tones of mesh to create a “blended” colour effect, so you can take the colours of summer and blend them right into the colours of fall! A wreath like this will look right at home on your door at this time of year, no matter which way the weather is swinging day-to-day. And best of all, an ombre flower wreath is so easy to make when you use our UITC™ wreath boards. And we can show you how!

With the Unique in the Creek streamlined wreath making system, anyone at any skill level can make a wreath every time using fewer materials and less time than traditional wreath making methods. And that includes how to make a stunning DIY ombre flower wreath!

How to Make a DIY Ombre Flower Wreath

It all starts with a UITC™ wreath board. We use the UITC™  Large Wreath Board for our signature flower designs, though you can also use the Small Board to create the same ombre wreath on a smaller scale.

The UITC™ Large Wreath Board is a round, full board-style DIY Wreath frame that is 100% weatherproof and can withstand all manner of conditions. It’s 16″ in diameter unfinished and your finished ombre flower wreath creation will be approximately 24″- 32″ in diameter depending on what materials you use.

Ombre Flower Wreath: Step by Step

In this blog post we’ll use an orange/red ombre flower wreath as an example, but remember, the possibilities for your ombre DIY wreath are as endless as your imagination! This is just one type of ombre flower combination. Change the colours, petal fold, centre, and other details to make your DIY ombre wreath uniquely your own.

Preload the Wreath Board

First things first, preload your board with zip ties. If you’ve made a flower wreath before on one of our boards, you may already know how to do this, but there are some special considerations when preloading your board for making an ombre flower wreath.

Choose your Mesh & Flower Centre

Once you’ve prepared the preloaded board, it’s time to choose the three colours of mesh you’d like to use to create your flower petals. We recommend three colours of mesh that will blend well together from lightest to darkest, as this will help create that beautiful ombre “gradient” look! For a wide variety of mesh, visit our online shop!

At this point, you should also decide on what you’d like to use for your wreath centre. For this wreath, we used a realistic sunflower centre, but you could also make your own centre with materials and supplies from our online store or your local craft or dollar store.

Choose a Petal Fold

Next, choose your style of petal fold and start attaching each petal the the board. You’ll quickly get the hang of making each fold and enjoy the process of adding the petals to the board. Those preloaded cable ties are just so handy and make the process easy as pie!

Because you’re creating an ombre flower wreath, remember that the goal is to create a gradient effect, with one colour of petal blending seamlessly into the next. For this reason, work your way around the board adding the petals, going from lightest to darkest or darkest to lightest colour. With this wreath, Laurie did the darkest (red) petals at the back of the wreath, medium (orange) in the centre, and lightest (gold) at the front.

Add the Finishing Touches

Once you’re done adding the petals, it’s time to attach your centre! You’re going to love the feeling of adding the finishing touches and seeing your flower come together.

Just look at how beautiful it turns out! You’ll feel so satisfied having made this stunning piece of home decor with your own hands!

Ombre wreaths aren’t just for fall decor. A neutral colour palette always works well for any season, so in the transition from summer to fall, a wreath like the one above will look totally appropriate on your door! Just because it’s called “home decor” doesn’t mean it needs to go inside your home. The creations you make our on boards can also look terrific displayed outside and around your home. Think in the garden, on latticework, around a pool or pond, or adorning the fence. The possibilities are endless!

Just look at how great this backdrop of flowers looks on the latticework behind the pool! And yes, each of those flower heads was created using our Large and/or Small Wreath Boards. It really paints a beautiful summer scene, doesn’t it?

Designs created on our boards can also look amazing in your garden. For instance, creations made on our Wing Wreath Board, like this butterfly, look right at home in a garden setting, especially when you tie in the colours to match the rest of your garden.

For DIY home decor like this, just pick up a garden hook to hang your creation from and your cute critter will look like it’s floating above your beautiful flowers and plants!

Our wreath boards can also be used to make an adorable “potted” flower creation like this one by our friend, Pat McDonald. And this is just one way to do it! You could design any type of flowers you wanted for the flower heads, pick a pot of your choosing, and dress it up any way you’d like. Then, sit your DIY creation on your porch, deck, or somewhere in your garden. It could even make for some beautiful foyer decor!

Indoor Home Decor

If you’re looking to add some interest to the inside of your home, we’ve got you covered there too! Here are some ideas to inspire your indoor DIY home decor:

First things first, we just want to remind you that a beautiful flower wreath can look stunning on its own on a wall indoors just as much as out. It can really make the perfect accent piece in a room, especially when it ties into the colour scheme or pattern of the furniture, walls, or other surroundings, like these two indoor wreaths created by Laurie!

As soon as you put a wreath on a wall, it’s no longer a wreath, it’s art!

And what about taking the idea of a flower wreath, and turning it into something entirely different? By simply adding a reflective piece to the centre of this creation, a bold piece of DIY home decor becomes a gorgeous mirror.

We’ve also seen some creative folks turn flower wreath centres into working clocks–absolutely genius! Your creations can be both practical AND beautiful!

And indoors, your creations don’t always need to hang; a flower creation can be a beautiful accent piece on a bed amongst the pillows! Also, hanging a group of flower designs above a bed can make for a stunning alternative to a piece of canvas art. Don’t you love how Laurie decorated her bedroom?

Great for Children’s Rooms!

Speaking of bedrooms, sometimes when you’re decorating a child’s bedroom it can be tough to find the perfect accessories to match a theme. So why not create something yourself? A colourful horse or unicorn creation, made on our Horse Wreath Board, could look absolutely adorable on the wall in a girl’s bedroom, don’tcha think?

Or a fairy or angel design, made on our Triangle Wreath Board, is also lovely feminine design that could be cute in a girl’s room. And when you make it yourself, you can pick your materials to make sure everything matches your design plans just right.

How to Make Your DIY Home Decor

Okay, so you’ve got your DIY home decor ideas, you’re feeling inspired, and you’re ready to get started creating… but where do you begin?

Well, it all starts with one of our UITC™ Wreath Boards! Our Wreath Boards are the base for all your DIY home decor and wreath creations. Best of all, they make the whole home decor DIY process a breeze!

We recommend using cable ties (zip ties) with all of our DIY wreath boards to attach your materials. You really can use any material you wish as long as you can zip a cable tie around it. Any material is fair game! And it helps you use far fewer materials so that the DIY home decor making process is much more cost effective and environmentally friendly.

Once you’ve preloaded the board, you’re ready to go! From here, you’ll use materials and accessories to truly make your DIY home decor your own.
